Native to Mexico the Jalapeno is a member of the species Capsicum annuum and is widely considered to be the most recognized chilli in the US. Pronounced ha lay pain yo, in Mexico the jalapeno is also known as chilli gordo and huachinango and is named after the town of Xalapa (sometimes spelled as Jalapa) in the Mexican state of Veracruz. While ingenious to Mexico these chillis are also grown in the southwestern US and throughout South America. Our Jalapenos are grown in Chile.
At about 1-1/2 wide and 2 to 3 inches long Jalapenos are harvested while still immature and are their familiar green color. When left on the vine to fully ripen they turn a bright red.
When dried and smoked the jalapeno is called Chipotle. We carry all types of chipotles the unsmoked, dried jalapenos are actually much more difficult to find.
With their familiar earthy-grassy flavour Jalapenos are considered a medium heat chilli coming in at between 2,500 and 8,000 SHU (Scoville Heat Units). One cup of JalapeƱo Flakes is approximately 2.2 ounces.
